The Lord’s Prayer: Our Daily Bread
Scripture Readings:
Proverbs 30:8 (NRSV)
Matthew 6:11 (NRSV)
In Exodus 16, the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you … and you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.” Morning by morning, day by day, the Israelites gathered their miraculous daily bread in the wilderness. How many day’s worth of manna were the Israelites to collect each day? One day’s worth—their daily bread. If they tried to horde the manna and get more than their daily bread, it would rot the next day. Jesus says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (NKJV)
In other words, pace yourself. Trust. Be content and grateful with enough—not your weekly, monthly, or yearly bread all at once. Daily God provides, daily we trust. Give us this day, our daily bread.
