Leadership and Followership
Scripture: Mark 1:4-11 (NRSV)
This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord Sunday in the liturgical calendar. Aristotle once said, “he who cannot be a good follower cannot be a good leader.” John the Baptist reversed it—he first led well, now he was going to follow well when Jesus appeared. That’s not easy to do. In fact, serving after you have been leading is one of the hardest things to do. But this was a watershed moment for John the Baptist and Jesus the Messiah at the Jordan River. Bible scholars have shown that Jesus’ baptism was a coronation, consecration, commissioning, and an inauguration for his public ministry that was about to commence. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Like John the Baptist, let us also point those who come to us, back to Jesus.
