Jesus Before Pilate
Scripture: Mark 15:1-15 (NRSV)
We’ve been hearing a lot about handwashing these days—that it’s one of the best ways to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Scrub your hands with soap and water thoroughly for twenty seconds. It’s the combination of soap and water that releases and rinses the grip of germs off your hands… and down the drain they go. Handwashing is a way to take responsibility—to own your own germs and do away with them. But there’s also a very different kind of hand washing that DOESN’T do the job. Instead of taking responsibility, Pilate avoided it. He thought he could wash his hands of the matter of Jesus. Yet with courage and dignity, the righteous Jesus fully embraced his responsibility of suffering and dying for a guilty world.
