I Am the Door
Scripture: John 10:7-10 (RSV)
In the ancient Near East, the shepherd would build a sheepfold for the sheep—usually made of low stone walls. The walls would be topped with thorny branches, kind of a precursor to barbed wire. This sheepfold would have one door or gate—an opening for the sheep to come in and come out. There would sometimes be situations where there wasn’t a door for the opening. In those cases the shepherd would act as a door—sleeping in front of the sheepfold entrance, keeping the sheep in and keeping wolves out. “I am the door,” says Jesus. He’s our entry into abundant life, our passageway to salvation and healing, our gateway into the God-life. Let us now and always find both protection and pasture in Christ, the Good Shepherd and Guardian of our souls, our Living Door.
