How to Be Human
Scripture: Genesis 1: 26-31 (NRSV)
The Latin root word for the English words “dust,” “soil,” or “ground” is humus. It’s from this root that we get the words “humanity” and “humility.” Humility is so important because going low is the way to reach the heights of our humanity. “Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord and he will lift you up.”
But another word that comes from the root humus is “humor.” Part of humility is seeing the humor of our humanity—that even though we’re so small, we’re still created in God’s image. Male and female, made in God’s likeness, enjoy a special relationship with God like no other creature. We reflect God in a way that no other created thing does. We are made in God’s image, but we are not God. We respect all, both male and female. We allow Christ to live through us.
This is how to be human.
