God is on the Move
Scripture: 2 Kings 5:1-14 (NIV)
The word “Christ” is not a name, but rather a title. It is the anglicized version of the Greek word “Cristos.” This word, in turn, is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word from which we get the word “Messiah.” That Hebrew word means “Anointed One.” While kings were also anointed in taking on their roles, Messiah referred to the one uniquely anointed to be the deliverer of God’s people. This is the role which Jesus filled. Because he was simultaneously divine and human, he could offer himself as the perfect sacrifice on our behalf. When I refer to Jesus the Christ, I could just as well say Jesus the Messiah. He is our Lord!
