Blessed Are the Pure in Heart
Scripture: Matthew 5:8 (NRSVue)
The sixth Beatitude of Jesus is “blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” The heart in the Scriptures has a different meaning than what we give the heart today. For us, the heart is your emotions and passions, but in the Bible, the heart is the center of your being, not only your emotions, but your will, your thoughts, your understanding. The heart is described as having eyes and a mind. Your heart is the very core of your being, who you are deep down. “Where your treasure is,” says Jesus, “there your heart will be also.” Purity of heart treasures the right things, the important things, the eternal things, and the invisible things. Or as Hebrews 11:1 famously defines it, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Purity of heart is faith working itself out in love–towards God, towards others, towards the self. Create in me a clean heart, o God!
