A Longing for Justice
Scripture: Isaiah 58:5-12 (NRSV)
One of the greatest questions philosophers have pondered and debated over the centuries is “What is justice?” We can fix broken legs, correct poor vision with glasses, but it seems we can’t fix injustice. Well, sometimes we do (think the end of slavery in the U.S.A., the dismantling of Apartheid, massive improvements in extreme poverty); but often we don’t. The innocent get convicted; the guilty are let off. It seems the bullies, not the meek, inherit the earth. Atrocities and genocides happen. And let’s be fully honest, there are times, we know deep inside of us what is right, and we still fail to do it. We can say justice is a childish fantasy or ignore what’s going on and look forward to heaven…or we can listen and respond to that still small voice that tells us we’ve been made for a world that involves justice and ultimately our world will be rescued and renewed by God at last.
