I Am the Resurrection and the Life
Scripture: John 11:17-27 (NRSV)
Today we look at another one of Jesus’ I Am Statements: “I am the Resurrection and the Life.” Jesus again is giving a radical message in the face of death: I AM the source of life. I AM life itself. Not I WAS, not I WILL BE, but I AM the resurrection and the life, RIGHT NOW. In the thick of death. Resurrection always comes out of death and difficulty—every time. Resurrection is not a doctrine nor an idea. Rather it is a person, a real presence—Jesus—God’s I AM. “Those who believe in me,” says Jesus, “even though they die, they will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” This is the good news for us: In Christ, we live—even in death. Just as Jesus asked Martha, so he asks us today: “Do you believe this?” In the face of all our challenges and losses, may we be a people who echo Martha’s response, “Yes, I do Lord.”
