I Am the Light of the World
Scripture: John 8:12 (NRSV)
Sevens are important in the gospel of John. Contained within it are: seven conversations with Jesus, seven miraculous signs Jesus performed , and seven I AM statements Jesus made about himself. Seven is the number of perfection and completion. And each of these sevens point to Jesus’ identity—that he is not only human, but divine. It’s a holy paradox, where Jesus says both: “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) and “The Father is greater than I.” (John 14:28) Jesus, God’s Unique Messenger, the Sent One, the Son of Man is also the great I AM made incarnate. On Sunday we will delve into one of Jesus’ “I Am” Statements: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) And so as we listen to the words of Christ, we must ask ourselves this: Who is Jesus for me? Do I live by Jesus’ guiding light?
